HitchDied headlines

It’s been a huge, busy, amazing week for the HitchDieds, so I’m reduced to sharing with you the bullet points.  Expect more eloquent and entertaining blog coverage to resume shortly, but in the meantime, here’s the news:

  1. Collin got his PhD.  His dissertation defense was one of the best academic presentations I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen A LOT.  Even though it got waaaay out of my league (the league where the last science class you took was a) seven years ago and b) called “Stars, Galaxies, and the Cosmos”) around the fourth slide, I could still see how polished it was and that Collin really, really knows his stuff.  And now he gets to be obnoxious about being a doctor and having a terminal degree (“Does that mean there is no treatment for your degree?” – Tom, my father-in-law)
  2. We are leaving for Cape Town slightly later than previously advertised.  Collin asked for a later start date at his post-doc so he could have more time to wrap up experiments in his current lab.  We’re now looking at a Mid-May departure.  I have mixed feelings: as relieved as I am to have a little more time to prepare for the move, and excited as I am about some new opportunities this opens up, I’m also ready to stop feeling like I’m about to leave the country and being trapped in this weird limbo state.
  3. My sister is pregnant! She’s due at the end of June.  I have known since November (when I offered her a hard cider and her total lack of poker face gave her away), and I think I deserve a medal for waiting so many months for her to FINALLY make her own announcement on Facebook before blogging/tweeting about it.  I’m incredibly excited for Becky and Pablo, but selfishly, I am sad I will be missing the birth of my niece.  I try to look on the bright side: when I come back for my first visit to the States, she’ll be a cute round baby instead of an alien raisin newborn.  I’m shallow.  Plus, thank god for Skype!
  4. The Frankly Scarlett Comedy Hour was a huge success.  I couldn’t have asked for a better audience, a better performance, or a better group of ladies to work with.  I’m still planning on writing an epic post about this whole experience, but in the meantime, stay tuned to our Facebook page for some pictures and videos from the show!

And that’s the news that’s fit to print!
